CALL FOR PAPERS: International Congress on Medieval Studies, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, May 12-15, 2011
Cultural Frontiers in the East and West
Chair: PKMS and MSCP
Medieval Studies, which in itself is a crossing of disciplines, has been expanding its scope beyond Catholic Europe to other successors of antiquity. This panel addresses questions of identity and interaction throughout medieval Europe and the Near East. How did the Western and Eastern medieval mind each conceive of cultural identity and of the “other”? What borders were crossed? Which cultures collided? What ideas were shared and which battles were fought? As our lines of inquiry broaden, we invite dialogue from east and west, to better investigate how our medieval counterparts interacted — both directly and indirectly — with cultures across borders.
Submission deadline: September 17, 2010
Please email a 300-word abstract to medieval.study@gmail.com
