Islamic archaeological find in Manacor (Mallorca)

Urban remodelling, which has been taking place in the centre of Manacor, has unearthed ceramics dating from the time of the Islamic occupation of Mallorca. Ceramics from the Islamic period, as well as from the 17th century, found in Calle Jaume Domenge, have provided evidence that an Islamic culture had previously been established in the centre of the town.

It is not the first time that the history of Manacor has been discovered after remaining buried for centuries, as years ago, other archaeological remains were uncovered near the church known as ‘dels dolors’. The town hall has called in the services of a professional archaeologist, Antoni Micol, to oversee the works as it was anticipated that more clues from the past would come to light.

For the time being, no further building work will be carried out, whilst experts clean and evaluate each piece of historical treasure. Bernat Amer, Town Planning Councillor, recently explained that quite a few artefacts have already been extracted and dated to both the Islamic period and the 17th century.
Some of the artefacts that have been uncovered are almost intact and will soon be restored to their original splendour.
