Come nel caso dei precedenti Congressi sono stati preventivamente stabiliti alcuni temi all'interno dei quali far confluire le proposte di intervento. La loro funzione è anche quella di fornire parametri coerenti di riferimento che individuino argomenti significativi per la storia degli studi ceramici.
In questa occasione sono stati mantenuti alcuni temi già presenti nei precedenti Congressi e, nel contempo, si sono suggeriti nuovi argomenti.
Gli aspetti tecnologici (organizzazione della produzione, ma anche invenzione e trasmissione delle tecniche) costituiscono temi ancora fondamentali, e per molti aspetti poco approfonditi, in questo settore degli studi. Naturalmente è importante che questi soggetti vengano svolti anche con una specifica attenzione rivolta alla
storia sociale della tecnologia.
La distribuzione delle ceramiche ha da sempre costituito un argomento base per gli studi della ceramica e spesso è stato strettamente collegato con il problema delle relazioni economiche e dei commerci. Tuttavia, con l'eccezione di alcune aree geografiche, si è poco lavorato sui modelli economici della distribuzione (con l'eccezione per l'epoca della Tarda Antichità) e molti territori sono stati al margine della nostre discussioni. Vorremmo dunque, in questa circostanza, sollecitare i ricercatori a riflettere al di là della semplice rilevazione di una attestazione distributiva dei prodotti e, nel contempo, aprire a tematiche poco presenti nei nostri incontri, come ad esempio le relazioni del nord Europa con il mondo Mediterraneo.
Su una linea più tradizionale si colloca la sezione dedicata alle Nuove Scoperte. Per evitare, tuttavia, che questo tema rappresenti il collettore di ricerche, anche interessanti, ma di rilievo locale, vorremmo che le novità andassero ad intercettare aspetti di natura tassonomica, cioè fossero funzionali a messe a punto di carattere tipologico o cronologico, oppure dessero voce a territori che fino ad oggi sono stati sotto-rappresentati nei nostri incontri (come ad esempio l'area dalmatica, alcune zone del nord Africa o i territori balcanici).
Il tema delle ceramiche (o delle terrecotte) per l'architetture è stato già presente nei nostri incontri (come quello di Aix-en-Provence), ma qui vogliamo riprenderlo perché si tratta di un argomento ancora poco sviluppato, forse anche in ragione di una sua collocazione ai confini con altre discipline come l'architettura o la storia delle tecniche costruttive. In omaggio alla città e al territorio che ospita il Congresso è stato stabilito, come di consuetudine, di dedi-
care poi una limitata sezione a contributi che illustrino il quadro degli studi su queste zone.
Parzialmente nuovi, invece, risultano gli ultimi due temi. Il soggetto che riguarda ceramiche e contesti sociali ha l'intendimento di far riflettere sugli aspetti comportamentali nei consumi, dalle componenti ideologiche a quelle economiche, mentre quello sulle funzioni e sugli spazi intende aprire la riflessione sull'uso delle ceramiche anche in rapporto alla loro collocazione nella topografia domestica o insediativa.


Tema 1. L'evoluzione e la trasmissione delle tecniche. Questa sezione accoglie contributi volti a discutere aspetti connessi con le componenti strettamente tecnologiche delle varie produzioni ceramiche, dai meccanismi di trasmissione all'organizzazione dei sistemi produttivi, dall'analisi spaziale delle botteghe alle tipologie delle fornaci.
Tema 2. Ceramiche e commerci. Questa sezione accoglie studi in grado di analizzare i sistemi distributivi (modelli di diffusione delle varie produzioni) o interpretare i meccanismi storico-economici che la circolazione dei prodotti ceramici ed anforici è in grado di descrivere nelle varie zone dal Mediterraneo al nord Europa.
Tema 3. Nuove scoperte. Questa sezione accoglie contributi relativi a nuovi ritrovamenti che risultino significativi per messe a punto innovative di carattere tipologico e cronologico oppure che siano in grado di illustrare territori ed aree geografiche fino ad oggi poco studiate.
Tema 4. Venezia e dintorni. Questo tema, in omaggio alla città e regione che ospita il congresso, accoglie contributi innovativi sui vari aspetti (tecnici, tipologici, cronologici, etc.) che riguardino le produzioni ceramiche in uso a Venezia città e nel territori limitrofi.
Tema 5. Ceramica e contesti sociali. Questa sezione accoglie contributi che intendono analizzare il rapporto tra distribuzione e consumi e ne illustrino le variazioni nel tempo e nello spazio in rapporto ai sistemi alimentari, ai modelli comportamentali, alle capacità economiche e alle identità sociali.
Tema 6. Ceramiche per le architetture. Questa sezione accoglie contributi relativi alle ceramiche usate nelle architetture (es. “bacini”), ma soprattutto per le architetture (dalle ceramiche speciali alle mattonelle/mattoni decorati e/rivestiti).
Tema 7. Del nome, dell'uso e dello spazio. Questa sezione accoglie contributi che si pongono l'obbiettivo di studiare le ceramiche sulla base delle loro funzioni, lette anche attraverso la nomenclatura documentata nelle fonti e in rapporto allo spazio di utilizzo.

Comme ce fut le cas lors des précédents congrès, quelques thèmes ont été proposés autour des quels seront organisées les propositions de communication. Ils fournissent des paramètres cohérents de références qui définissent des orientations significatives pour l'histoire des études céramologiques.
A cette occasion, des thèmes déjà présents dans les précédents congrès ont été maintenus et de nouveaux axes sont proposés pour le prochain congrès.
Les aspects technologiques (organisation de la production, mais aussi innovation et transmission des techniques) constituent des thèmes encore fondamentaux dont certains secteurs sont encore peu approfondis. Il est naturellement important que ces sujets soient développés avec aussi une attention toute particulière à l'histoire sociale des techniques.
La question des aires de distribution des céramiques a depuis toujours constitué un thème de base pour les études de la céramique et a été étroitement liée aux problèmes des relations économiques et commerciales. Cependant à l'exception de quelques aires géographiques, on a peu travaillé sur les modèles économiques de la distribution (à l'exception de l'Antiquité tardive) et beaucoup de territoires sont restés en marge de nos discussions. Nous souhaiterions donc en cette circonstance, inviter les chercheurs à réfléchir au delà de la seule définition des aires de diffusion des produits, et ouvrir ce congrès à des thématiques peu présentes dans nos régions, comme par exemple les relations du Nord de l'Europe avec le monde méditerranéen.
Sur une ligne plus traditionnelle, on retiendra la session consacrée aux nouvelles découvertes. Pour éviter cependant que ce thème regroupe des recherches intéressantes mais d'intérêt local, nous souhaiterions que la nouveauté provienne soit d'analyses à caractère taxonomique, fonctionnelle ou à caractère typologique ou chronologique ; et l'on privilégiera également les territoires qui jusqu'à ce jour ont été peu représentés comme par exemple l'aire dalmate, certaines zones d'Afrique du Nord et les territoires Balkaniques.
Le thème des céramiques (ou de la terre cuite) pour l'architecture était déjà présent dans nos rencontres (comme celle d'Aix-en-Provence) mais ici nous voulons le reprendre car il s'agit d'un sujet encore peu développé peut-être même
en raison de sa définition aux confins de disciplines autres telles que l'architecture ou l'histoire des techniques de construction. En hommage à la ville et au territoire qui accueillent le congrès, on a choisi comme à l'accoutumée de
consacrer une petite séance aux contributions qui illustrent les études dans cette zone.
Les deux derniers thèmes sont en revanche plus neufs. Le sujet qui concerne les céramiques et les contextes sociaux a l'ambition de faire réfléchir aux comportements de consommation, dans leurs composantes idéologiques et économiques, tandis que celui sur les fonctions et sur les espaces voudrait ouvrir la réflexion sur l'usage des céramiques dans leur rapport avec leur localisation dans l'espace domestique ou la topographie des lieux.

Thème 1. L'évolution et la transmission des techniques. Cette session accueille les
communications tournées sur les aspects strictement technologiques des différentes productions de céramiques, depuis les mécanismes de transmissions à l'organisation des systèmes de production, des analyses spatiales des ateliers aux typologies des fours.
Thème 2. Céramiques et commerce. Il regroupe les études en mesure d'analyser les systèmes de distribution (modèles de diffusion des différentes productions) ou les interprétations des mécanismes historico-économiques que la circulation des céramiques et amphores permettent de décrire dans plusieurs zones de la Méditerranée au Nord de l'Europe.
Thème 3. Nouvelles découvertes. Cette session est consacrée aux contributions relatives aux nouvelles découvertes dont les résultats sont significatifs et novateurs d'un point de vue typologique ou chronologique ou qui concernent des territoires ou aires géographiques encore peu étudiées.
Thème 4. Venise et son territoire. Ce thème, en hommage à la ville et la région d'accueil du Congrès, recueille les contributions novatrices sur divers aspects (techniques, typologiques, chronologiques, etc.) qui concernent les différentes productions de céramiques en usage dans la cité vénitienne et dans les territoires voisins.
Thème 5. Céramiques et contextes sociaux. Cette session accueille les contributions qui analyseront les rapports entre distribution et lieux de consommation et en illustreront les variations dans le temps et l'espace en rapport avec les systèmes alimentaires, les modèles comportementaux, les capacités économiques et les identités sociales.
Thème 6. Céramiques architecturales. Ce thème regroupe les contributions concernant les céramiques utilisées dans les constructions (exemples des bacini) mais surtout pour l'architecture (depuis les céramiques spécifiques comme les briques, les carreaux décorés et revêtus.
Thème 7. Du nom, de l'usage et de l'espace. Cette session accueille les contributions dont l'objectif est d'étudier les céramiques sur la base de leur fonction, liée aussi à la documentation dans les sources écrites et en rapport avec l'espace d'utilisation.

As in the case of previous Congresses some themes have been established to group the proposals for paper. Their function is also to give consistent reference parameters that could identify meaningful subjects for the history of ceramic studies.
In this occasion some themes from previous congresses have been maintained and at the same time new ones have been suggested.
Technological aspects (organisation of production, but also invention and transmission of techniques) are still fundamental themes, for some aspect not sufficiently studied, in this sector of the research. It is of course important
that these subject would be addressed with a specific attention to the social history of technology.
The distribution of pottery has always constituted a base subject of ceramic studies and has been often strictly linked with the issue of economical relationships and trade. However, with the exception of some geographical areas, not much has been done on the economical models of distribution (Late Antiquity excluded) and many territories have been marginalized. We would like then to incite the researchers to reflect further than the simple recording of a distribution of products and at the same time open the discussion to themes almost neglected to date, like the relationship between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
On a more traditional line is the section on New Discoveries. In order to avoid that this theme become the collecting section of interesting but local research, we would like the papers of this section to intercept taxonomic aspects, that is functional to typological or chronological refinements, or that could bring to the fore territories traditionally underrepresented in our conferences (for example the Dalmatian area, some parts of northern Africa or the Balkans).
The theme of architectural pottery has already been represented in our meetings (for example in Aix-en-Provence), but we would like to address it again here because it is still underdeveloped, possibly because it lies at the border with other disciplines such as architecture or history of building techniques. In honour of the town and territory hosting the congress it has been decided to dedicate a small section to papers illustrating studies on these areas.
The last two themes are partially new. The subject on pottery and social contexts intends to stimulate reflections on the behavioural aspects of consumption, from ideological to economical components, whereas the subject on functions and space intends to open the discussion to the use of pottery in relationship with their topographical, domestic or settlement distribution.


Theme 1. Evolution and techniques’ transmission. This section collects paper discussing strictly technological aspect of various pottery productions, from the transmission
mechanisms to the organization of productive systems, from spatial analysis of workshops to the typologies of kilns.
Theme 2. Pottery and trade. This section collects studies analysing distributional systems (diffusion models of various productions) or interpreting historical-economical mechanisms described by pottery and amphoras distribution in the various areas of the Mediterranean and northern Europe.
Theme 3. New discoveries. This section collects papers on new finds that could be meaningful for technological or chronological refinements or can be able to illustrate underrepresented territories or geographical areas.
Theme 4. Venice and hinterland. This theme, in honour of the town and region hosting the conference, will collect innovative papers on different aspects (technical, typological, chronological, etc.) regarding pottery productions used in the town of Venice and its hinterland.
Theme 5. Pottery and social contexts. This section collects papers analyzing the relationship between distribution and consumption, illustrating its variation through time and space and in relationship with alimentation, behavioural models, economical capacities and social identities.
Theme 6. Architectural pottery. This section collects papers relating to pottery used in architecture (for example “bacini”) but above all for the architecture (from special ceramics to decorated/coated tiles and bricks.
Theme 7. Of name, use and space. This section collects papers aiming to study pottery on the basis of their functions, read also through the names used in the written sources and their space of use
