Call for papers: Early medieval archaeology student symposium (Durham, 19-21 may)

CALL FOR PAPERS: EARLY MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY STUDENT SYMPOSIUM

The Universities of Durham, York and Newcastle are delighted to announce the first call for papers for the seventh Early Medieval Archaeology Student Symposium, EMASS 2014: northeastern EMASS (neEMASS).

EMASS is a popular, friendly arena for postgraduate researchers specialising in archaeological and interdisciplinary approaches to the early medieval period in Europe and further afield. This year’s EMASS will be hosted by a network of three major northeastern Universities (Durham, York and Newcastle), hence “neEMASS”, and it will be held in the atmospheric Prior’s Hall in Durham Cathedral, Durham.
We welcome contributions from postgraduate and early career researchers contextualising the ‘early medieval’ period ranging from the 4th to 12th centuries AD, and we also encourage the submission of papers involving community-led projects, museum-based studies and commercial ventures. EMASS has always been interdisciplinary in scope and we welcome papers from a range of disciplines from history to literature to palaeosteological and palaeoenvironmental research.

neEMASS is calling for:

Individual Papers: 20 minutes long followed by a 10 minute discussion

Sessions: We welcome session proposals with at least 2 or 3 papers linked by a common theme.

Posters: A2-A1 size. The poster session will be held over lunch breaks; this will be an occasion for the poster authors to present their work to the delegates in an informal manner. A call for posters will follow shortly.

Deadline for submissions is Friday 7th March 2014. Please see the attached pdf for more information.

Conference registration will open on Monday 10th March 2014 and close on Wednesday 16th April 2014. Details to follow.
