‘Contextualising the Dead’ – a cross disciplinary conference examining the role of the dead in society (past and present)

The Department of Archaeology, Anthropology and Forensic Sciences at Bournemouth University will be hosting an international conference in December 2016 (16th – 18th) to bring together researchers from a range of academic disciplines to discuss death and how it is reflected and dealt with in human society (past and present). The conference is specifically targetted towards researchers whom are working on mortuary practices, beliefs and associated remains, monumentality and landscapes to facilitate wider scholarly debate on their work. Specialities encompassed, but not limited to, are human evolution, landscape archaeology, field archaeology, bioarchaeology, sociology, ethnology, ethnohistory and history.

Call for Sessions

The organising committee is calling for session abstracts that will fit in one of the themes listed below. Session proposals should be restricted to a maximum of 400 words. Proposals should indicate the name or names and affiliations of the session convenor/s, and include an indicative list of possible speakers wherever possible. The organisers will reserve the right to allocate to allocate free-floating paper proposals to a specific session, and we ask that session convenors allow for that possibility when developing their proposal. The sessions will each be allocated half-day time slots.

The deadline for submission of session proposals is the 1st May 2016 with a subsequent notification of session acceptance on or before 6th June 2016.
